Sports injuries can sideline a weekend warrior or an elite athlete. You want to get back to your game while minimizing the possibility of reinjury.  Physical therapists have the most intensive academic anatomy coursework of any health care professional.  Using that information, we are the experts of analyzing movement, diagnosing your problem, and developing the care plan to return to your sport as fast as possible.

For example, when we treat runners; basketball, tennis and volleyball players, who see us for ankle, knee, hip or back pain, we must look from the ground up. The reason is that everything changes when the foot hits the ground. Tremendous forces are generated on all the joints. These impacts have consequences all the way up the body. For example, correcting motion in the ankle joint can correct your knee pain.

We find that athletes come to us when they have trouble transitioning from previous treatment back to their sport. Getting you back to your sport is more than just being able to get through your daily activities. Most rehab professionals only concentrate on getting you back to daily function.

Can my performance be improved with physical therapy even if I don't have an injury?

Yes!  A customized therapy plan that takes into consideration such things as your age, medical history, fitness level, and gender can lead to workouts that increase speed, agility, stamina, and strength.  You may also be able to target sport-specific skill enhancements related to movements like jumping, throwing, and balancing which in turn can also reduce your likelihood for future injury.

When should I start to see an improvement?

Every person is different, and not everyone can follow the same timeline.  We work with you to make a treatment plan which will include follow up and regular maintenance visits.  You will often be assigned exercises and routines to work on separate from your scheduled appointments.  Your rate of improvement will depend upon many factors including your general fitness level, your adherence to your protocols, your age, and your overall health.

My child will be starting a new sport soon. Can Physical Therapy help him/her?

Yes.  A customized therapy plan will be developed for your child to assess their strengths and weaknesses.  We will evaluate muscle tone and imbalances, posture, movement patterns, as well as their techniques.  We then provide them with workouts that increase speed, agility, stamina, and strength.  You may also be able to target sport-specific skill enhancements related to movements like jumping, throwing, and balancing which in turn can also reduce your likelihood for future injury.
